Hola, I am Ivan Aristeguieta, the ‘Maracas from Caracas’, a Venezuelan-born comedian, or as what Aussies call me – ‘Mexican’. I get it, we all sound the same.
For eight years now, I’ve lived in Australia - living amongst you, observing you, learning about you, and now I make a very good living taking the piss out of you. I am a true blue, dinky di Venez-stralian. Nah, she’ll be right! (Who is she by the way?)
I left Venezuelan after I was carjacked at gunpoint (true story!). Thank you for giving me a visa, Australia!
My TV comedy credits include performing at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival OXFAM GALA (2016-19) and the Just for Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival (2017). In 2016 I was awarded Best Newcomer by the Sydney Comedy Festival, and starred in my own ABC online sitcom, Lost in Pronunciation, a fictionalised account of my immigration to Australia. I have also been a guest panellist in numerous TV shows: Have you Been Paying Attention, The Project, Celebrity Name Game, Hughesy We Have a Problem and The Living Room.
Oh, and I am a trained cook, food technologist and brewer. I’m a loud and proud food nerd. When I’m not performing, I’m probably making my own chorizo at home, or experimenting switching Vegemite for Miso paste. Don’t tell anybody this, but I was making bread at home before it was cool. My 2016 festival show was called CHORIZO SIZZLE: a one-hour comedy special dedicated to food. This show was later broadcasted by ABC, as a live comedy special. I’ve just released my second live comedy special, The Fourth Floor.
I have currently two online comedy cooking shows, About This Much- the most inaccurate cooking show on the web- and Pimp my Tucker, Mother Tucker – bringing new twists on Aussie classic dishes. During the pandemic I’ve also been hostin, About This Much - Live, an online ‘follow-along’ cooking party, where I bring my kitchen to yours, via Zoom.
As well as the jokes, I bring authentic Latino and European (I’m half Spanish) cooking knowledge and skills, as well as an obsessive love of Japanese cooking. I even did a 2-week ramen class in Tokyo. I currently have over 30k followers on Facebook, and over 8k on Instagram.
